Former CNN anchor T.J. Holmes was surprised when he was pulled over a mile from his Atlanta home without a reason.
Tweeting the entire ordeal, the police officer who stopped explained that he just wanted to 'make sure' Mr Holmes had 'insurance on the car.'
Outraged by seemingly obvious evidence of racial profiling, Mr Holmes snapped a photo of the officer through his rear view mirror with the caption 'Driving while black ain't no joke!'
He continued to tweet updates from the side of the road while the officers tried to explain to him why he was pulled over.
'Yep, in sitting on the side of the road 1 mile from my house with 2 cop cars behind me,' Mr Holmes shared with his 49,451 followers.
'Officer has yet to give a reason for why he stooped [sic] me.'
Trying to reason with the officers did not yield a satisfactory answer.
'This is a damn shame,' Mr Holmes tweeted. 'Officer is literally stumbling over his words trying to explain why he stopped me.'
Eventually, the two officers come up with a reason they think will quell the angered reporter.
'Officer's reason for pulling me over: "wanted to make sure you have insurance on the car." I kid you not,' Mr Holmes shared.
He says that he managed to avoid jail time for his resistance, but that all was not well.
'Still pissed beyond words right now. But Lord knows I'm not the only this will happen to today,' he wrote.
He begun using the hashtag #showmeyourpapers.
His fans responded with outrage.
'I’m not a lawyer. But that doesn’t sound like grounds to stop someone,' said one.
'God is just keeping you grounded & full of fire for bringing folks important stories to light!' said another.
Mr Holmes promised to write a detailed post on his website later in the day.
He left CNN for BET Networks in December 2011 and will debut his new show later this year, a late night, comedic news show titled Don't Sleep With T.J. Holmes.
